Colin Chapman

Anthony Colin Bruce Chapman (19 May 1928 – 16 December 1982) was the English design engineer and inventor who founded Lotus Cars in 1952. A structural engineering graduate of University College London, he applied aeronautical techniques to automotive design, prioritizing light weight over raw horsepower. His philosophy, summarized as "Adding power makes you faster on the straights. Adding lightness makes you faster everywhere," drove a decade of technical dominance. Under his direction from 1962 to 1978, Team Lotus secured seven Constructors' titles and six Drivers' Championships, while also winning the Indianapolis 500 in 1965.

The resulting Lotus 29 finished second in 1963 with Jim Clark, swiftly replacing the decades-old tube-frame chassis standard. Chapman later turned to aerodynamics, inspired by Jim Hall. In early 1968, Lotus tested wings at a Tasman Formula race, though Ferrari and Brabham were first to use them in F1. When early wings mounted high on struts failed, forcing FIA restrictions, Chapman moved radiators to the sides to lower drag. His most radical leap came with "ground effect," pioneered with Tony Rudd and Peter Wright. Using sliding skirts to create a low-pressure vacuum under the car, the Lotus 79 dominated the 1978 championship. Although skirts were eventually banned for instability, the concept of downforce generation remained fundamental. In 1981, he attempted to solve driver fatigue from stiff suspension with the dual-chassis Lotus 88; it passed scrutineering but was barred by protests before racing.
